DUTIES:
The Behavioral Health Care Line (BHCL) at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Health Care System is seeking a Medical Support Assistant (MSA) for the new 10 bed Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient Unit. The MSA is responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical duties and is the liaison between the nursing staff in their area and customers both internal and external to the medical center. The MSA must be proficient in providing excellent c! ustomer service; serving as the receptionist for the nursing station with the ability to determine the nature of calls and answering questions of visitors to the ward; and responding appropriately and assuring that all messages are communicated in a timely manner. He/she must handle all patient information in accordance with provisions of the Privacy Act; process all patient information ( admissions, transfers, discharges, appointments) accurately and in a timely manner in Vista and CPRS; verify orders and notify nursing staff of STAT and other emergency orders; coordinate release of information; arrange and coordinates inpatient appointments for timeliness and to avoid conflicts with patient treatment; retrieve documents in Vista Imaging; maintain office supplies; complete work orders; anda communicate with housekeeping and nursing staff on beds and areas of the unit that need cleaning or repair. The MSA must be able to effectively perform MSA duties in the event of comput! er downtime and be able to function in whatever capacity is needed duri! ng an emergency i.e. handling phonecalls or directing traffic. He/she will typically have contact with patients ages 60 and on up into the geriatric years. The MSA will report directly to the Nurse Manager of the Geriatric Psychiatry Inpatient Unit.

Physical Standards/Requirements :
This position requires walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, pushing, turning, and at times carry heavy loads. The work may require regular and recurr! ing ability to to physically control or defend against emotionally ill patients. Must be able to utilize good body mechanics, and have stamina to withstand stress.
English Language Proficiency
: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Experience/Education GS-3 (Entry Level):
Education:
One year of education above high school
Experience:
Six months clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.
Experience/Education Combination:
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

At least one year at the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required of the position.
