High school or equivalent, plus specialized, short-t! erm training in basic patient care (CNA, Med. Asst., Military medical training, EMT-B, NA, HHA, Nursing student who has completed a skills lab) or at least 6 months experience in direct patient care required.

Requires detailed knowledge of specific procedures in terms of what and how work is to be done as well as why it is done, this level includes interpretation of data. This staff member must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of patients served.

Ability to make routine decisions that usually have a limited number of solutions.

Ability to exercise judgment in selection of the order of work assignments to meet clearly established schedules. Unusual cases or schedule changes are often referred to the immediate supervisor for resolution.

Walks, sits, stands in place, arm/wrist/hand movement, lifts.

Primary Job Functions

  • Monitors patients and collects information f! or documentation in the patient record. Stamps and assembles p! atient charts. Posts laboratory and other tests results. Transports patients and documents action on patient record. Collects and records vital signs, weights, and other patient data in patient record. Administers oxygen under the direction of a licensed Nurse. Assists nurses and physicians with sterile procedures.
  • Documents all care provided in the appropriate place in the patient record
  • Removes peripheral, intravenous therapy lines. Performs phlebotomy. Performs wound care and dressing changes. Prepares patients for surgery. Inserts and removes gastric and urethral tubes. Performs enemas and disimpactions. Performs bedside testing such as oximetry, ECG, Glucometery, urinalysis and other tests. Assists with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing and walking patients.
  • Operates patient monitoring systems specific to unit needs (such as, cardiac and fetal heart monitoring).
  • Participates in the nutritional well being of the pati! ent through tray delivery, assistance with patient set-up, assists those patients that are dependent for their intake needs, and accurately records consumption.
  • Uses the computerized Patient Care Information System (PACIS) at the skill level commensurate with the responsibilities included in this description.
  • Insures cleanliness of nutrition areas and general unit. Cleans and stores equipment. Empties trash, linen bags and sharps containers.
  • Stocks medical supplies, linens and paper goods. Inventories equipment as required. Processes broken equipment as directed. Maintains equipment logs as required.
  • Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology and Pathology. Transports x-rays, blood and equipment. Delivers patient food trays and nourishment.
  • Performs basic clerical duties such as answering phones, taking messages, filing and copying.
  • Assists or provides patient hygiene to include, shaving, mouth care, foot care, peric! are, and bathing.
  • Assists patients with portable or wall oxyge! n, and assures proper storage of E cylinders.
  • Organizes care in a manner that contributes to the overall quality of the team.
  • Communicates information pertinent to the end of shift summation before leaving the unit.
  • Performs other functions as required.
