Skills: High school education or equivalent required. Less than one-year experience in patient care or customer service preferred. Actively pursuing career in healthcare preferred. Receives on-the-job training and competency verification to perform primary functions. Must acquire and maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification within the first 30 days of employment.
Knowledge: Requires knowledge of patient care assistant duties and dark room duties in terms of what is to be done and an understanding of how it is to be done. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Abilities: . Mental Power: Routine tasks are performed in a defined order that seldom varies for each assignment. Unusual cases or schedule changes are referred to the immediate supervisor. Physical Power: On feet/walks up to 8 or more hours a day. Assumes and maintains various postural positions including but not limited to: kneeling, reaching, stooping, bending, crouching. Reposition patients. Transfer patients. Push/ pull patients in wheelchair.
Primary Job Functions
- Maintain established departmental policies and procedures. ,
- Maintains established medical therapies to include, but not limited to, oxygen, IVâs, restraints, catheters etc. during transport and notifies nursing staff immediately if medical equipment alarms.
- Responsible for effective communication between patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Retrieve, store and transport oxygen cylinders according to hospital policy.
- Follows assigned priority as directed for admission, discharge and transfer activity.
- Assist with patient transfers from department to another within facility.
- Utilize automated processes within bed management system to notify the Bed Management Center of patient activity.
- Gather equipment from within facility to ensure equipment is available when needed.
- Deliver malfunctioning equipment to Maintenance for repair.
ï¾ Assists the patient in basic care needs as delegated by nurse, ie. Eating, drinking, ambulating and personal hygiene.
ï¾ Provides companionship, remains in constant attendance of assigned patient, arranges breaks with nurse.
ï¾ Maintains confidentiality of all healthcare information.
ï¾ Delivers specimens to Laboratory, Microbiology and Pathology. Transports x-rays, blood and equipment. Delivers patient food trays and nourishment.
ï¾ Performs basic clerical duties such as answering phones, taking messages, filing and copying.
ï¾ Participates in educational programs, in-service meetings and departmental meetings as required.
