The Albuquerque Geriatric and Extended Care Service is recruiting for a full-time Medical Director for its Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) program which consists of two interdisciplinary teams, one for the Albuquerque area and the other for rural New Mexico. This is a growth-oriented program with a current census of 300+ frail homebound veterans with plans for increased geographic ex! pansion. The Medical Director and two nurse practitioners serve as primary care providers for this largely geriatric patient population which requires that each drives a government vehicle to various home-based locations such as private homes, assisted living homes and medical foster homes.
The Medical Director works closely with the HBPC Program Director, the Nurse Manager and other team members to facilitate development and implementation of performance improvement plans and program development strategies. He or she also serves in a leadership role in weekly interdisciplinary team care conferences providing care plan oversight and case-based education. As such, the medical practitioner is expected to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care and to staff education. In addition, the medical practitioner is expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communicat! ion skills and behaviors that promote mutual team respect and cohesiven! ess, as well as a demonstrated commitment to ethical care for the diverse needs of New Mexico's veteran population.
The Albuquerque VA has a close working relationship with the University of New Mexico, and through UNM's Department of Geriatrics the Medical Director serves as a faculty member for the purpose of educating medical students, residents and other students of health care by on-the-job exposure to home care and by didactic presentations during educational meetings. A variety of research options are available and are encouraged by administrative staff at both the VA and UNM. Minimum qualifications: Academic qualification and experience in the administration of geriatrics and long-term care programs. Faculty appointment at the University School of Medicine will be commensurate with training and achievements.
As a physician member of the Geriatric and Extended Care service and Department of Medicine, the Medical Director participates in weekly telephone call ! coverage for the inpatient Community Living Center and Palliative Care floor. He or she is directly supervised by the Medicine service's Chief of Geriatrics and participates in scheduled meetings of both the geriatric staff as well as general medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) Licensure: Must have a current full, active, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current regis! tration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continui! ng active, current licensure.
Minimum/Preferred qualifications : M.D. degree Certification or experience in Hospice and Palliative Care Completion of an accredited fellowship in Geriatrics or experience in Geriatric Care Home Care Experience
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over): Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted.
